How To Find The Serial Number On Your Kindle 2

This is a quick and dirty how-to. Essentially should you need to find the serial number on your Kindle 2, below are the steps.

  • Turn on your Kindle 2 and press the [Home] key
  • Press the [Menu] key and choose Settings
  • Press the following keys in order: 411
  • The device info page will display with your serial number

Why would you need the serial number on your Kindle 2? Well for a few reasons.

  1. In the case of loss or theft, to report it to either the police or your insurance company, you would most definitely need the device serial number
  2. To file a claim against the warranty
  3. To register the device online with Amazon

So for all these reasons and more, it’s important to have or at least know how or where to find the serial number on your Kindle 2. It’s as simple as steps 1 through 4 above.

    Got it! That enables my son to purchase and send me a book or two to read. Question! My wife purchased this as a retirement/birthday present for me. She bought it thro’ her account so all of the details are registered to her. This causes some problems when trying to use this instrument to full advantage. If I want to send email to my kindle account for example I can’t. I can only send it to her as the registered owner. Lot’s of other examples of how I am restricted due to my not being registered as the official owner.
    Can I get around this?

    Hello Malcolm and I hope you are enjoying your new Kindle! The best way I can think of for you to fix that problem is to change the registration to your Amazon account. I am on the road today so I don’t have instructions on hand for that, but I will see what I can find and either post them up here or shoot you an e-mail.

    Amazon told me the first two steps, but not the third. You put an end to my misery and frustration. And all because I had the original serial number stored with a D instead of a 0. Poor eyesight, small numbers, or dodgy fingers – I don’t know.

    Hey Lindsay, I think you are going to have to email Amazon customer service on that one! I am sure they will take care of you, though, as I bet you are not the first one to have that problem.     My problem is the same as Linday’s.
    It’s a Kindle going very cheaply on Ebay, but Amazon need the serial number before they can tell me how much they want to repair the screen.

    I wonder whether there is any way of finding it via the USB connections.

    Hmm…let me do a little more digging today. In fact, I will try hooking mine up via usb and see if I find anything. I hadn’t thought of that!

    To view the serial number on your Kindle if the screen is not working, press Alt + Shift + . this will display the serial number on the Kindle (although you will not be able to see it, since the screen isn’t working) then hit Alt + Shift + G From there, plug the Kindle into your computer via its USB cable and navigate to the Kindle’s “documents” folder. Inside the folder are all the various books you have stored on the device, but search for a filename that begins with “screen-shot.” The file will show a “picture” of the kindle screen. It will show two bar codes with the serial number listed under the bar codes.

    I am selling my Kindle on ebay and someone asked me for my serial number. Is there anyway for them to hijack my device b/c they have the s/n? and why would they need my s/n?

    I tried this on my Kindle 3 but came unstuck putting in numbers as the ‘Sym’ button was not active. Then I noticed in the settings page under device info it has the serial number (DOH!)
